Squirrel

Squirrels are a medium-sized rodent with large bushy tails Squirrels are generally clever and persistent animals They are omnivores; they eat a wide variety of plant food, including nuts, seeds, fruits, fungi, and green vegetation, and they also eat insects, eggs, and even small birds, smaller mammals, frogs, and carrion In tropical areas, these foods often replace nuts They are indigenous to Europe, Asia, America and Africa

Facts about Squirrels
  • A few animals, like the flying squirrel, have a flap of skin between their front and back legs which helps them glide from tree to tree The colugo has a bigger cloak of skin, and it can glide twice as far- up to 100 metres
  • Flying squirrels don't really fly, they glide from branch to branch A blanket-like furry skin stretches their front and hind legs, and acts as a parachute, enabling the squirrel to soar like a kite
  • Millions of trees are accidentally planted by squirrels who bury nuts and then forget where they hid them

KANGURU
Kangaroo

Kangaroos have long been regarded as strange animals Early explorers described them as creatures that had heads like deer (without antlers), stood upright like men, and hopped like frogs They have large, powerful hind legs, large feet adapted for leaping, a long muscular tail for balance, and a small head Like all marsupials, female kangaroos have a pouch called a marsupium in which joeys complete postnatal development They are the only large animals to use hopping as a means of locomotion The comfortable hopping speed for Red Kangaroo is about 20-25 km/h (13-16 mph), but speeds of up to 70 km/h (44 mph) can be attained, over short distances, while it can sustain a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) for more than a mile The average life expectancy of a kangaroo is about 4-6 years, with some living until they are about 23 They are large herbivores, feeding on grass and roots, and they chew cud Because of its grazing, the kangaroo has developed specialized teeth Its incisors are able to crop grass close to the ground, and its molars chop and grind the grass

Facts about Kangaroos
  • Kangaroos hop across the grassy plains of Australia at high speed They cruise at 40 kph and reach 60kph for short bursts, using their long tail to help them balance One red kangaroo made a record breaking long-jump of almost 13 metres
  • A group of Kangaroos is called a mob
  • A young Kangaroo is called a Joey
  • Emus and kangaroos cannot walk backwards
  • The Kangaroo's ancestors lived in trees Today there are eight different kinds of tree kangaroos
  • There are more than 50 different kinds of kangaroos

Panda

PANDA

The Giant panda is an endangered species and is recognized by its distinctive black patches around the eyes, over the ears, and across its round body It belongs to carnivore order but its 99% diet is bamboo It also eats food such as honey, eggs, fish and yams The giant panda is a favorite of the public, at least partly on account of the fact that the species has an appealing baby-like cuteness that makes it seem to resemble a living teddy bear Adults measure around 15 m long and around 75 cm tall at the shoulder Males can weigh up to 115 kg (253 pounds) Females are generally smaller than males, and can occasionally weigh up to 100 kg (220 pounds) Giant Pandas live in mountainous regions, such as Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, and Tibet They spent most of their lives alone, with males and females meeting only during the breeding season

Facts about Panda or Giant Pandas
  • Only about 1,000 of these black-and-white relatives of bears survive in the wild
  • Pandas eat almost nothing but bamboo shoots and leaves Occasionally they eat other vegetation, fish, or small animals, but bamboo accounts for 99 percent of their diets
  • Pandas eat fast, they eat a lot, and they spend about 12 hours a day doing it The reason: They digest only about a fifth of what they eat Overall, bamboo is not very nutritious The shoots and leaves are the most valuable parts of the plants, so that's what a well-fed panda concentrates on eating To stay healthy, they have to eat a lot-up to 15 percent of their body weight in 12 hours-so they eat fast
  • Pandas' molars are very broad and flat The shape of these teeth helps the animals crush the bamboo shoots, leaves, and stems they eat To get the bamboo to their mouths, they hold the stems with their front paws, which have enlarged wrist bones that act as thumbs for gripping
  • There are many species of bamboo Only a few of these grow at the high altitudes where pandas live today A panda should have at least two bamboo species where it lives, or it will starve
  • Giant pandas used to be able to move quite easily from one mountaintop to another in search of food
  • Pandas are shy; they don't venture into areas where people live This restricts pandas to very limited areas
  • And sometimes, when all the bamboo in their area dies off naturally, pandas starve because they're unable to move to new areas where other bamboo species thrive

MAYMUNLAR

Monkey

Monkeys are one of the most recognized animals in the world They are often long-tailed, medium-sized They spend the majority if their lives in treetops, while others call flatter savannas and grasslands home Most monkeys survive of a diet of fruit, leaves, nuts, berries, eggs, insects and occasionally other smaller animals

Facts about Monkeys
  • The pygmy marmoset, whose body is only 10 centimetres long, lives in the forests along the Amazon river, in Soth America It is the smallest monkey in the world Unlike other monkeys, marmosets have claws for gripping on to the bark as they climb trees They curl their long tail round branches to help them balance They eat insects and nuts
  • In Japan, where macaque monkey live, the winters are very cold The Japanese macaques have shaggy coats to keep them warm and some keep out the cold by sitting in the hot water from volcanic springs

Bees

Bees are flying insects; they feed on nectar (an energy source) and pollen (protein and other nutrients source) Pollen is used as food for larvae Bees have long proboscis (tongue) which help them in get nectar from flowers They have antennae on their head, made up of 13 segments in male bees and 12 segments in female bees They have two pairs of wings, 6 legs and 2 eyes Mainly the body is divided into three parts; head, thorax and abdomen

Facts About Bees:
  • Their predators are kingbirds, mockingbirds, bee wolves, and dragonflies
  • They are major pollinators; they play an important role in transferring pollen from the anther to the stigma of a plant, thus helping in the reproduction of plants
  • Bees may be solitary or may live in various types of communities The bees who live in group are eusocial (good social) The group comprises of mother and daughter bees The mother is considered the “Queen” and the daughters as “workers” At certain stage male bees are also considered as group member, male bees are known as drones that mate with queen Solitary bees constructs nest herself
  • Eusocial bees provide honey, wax and pollinate but solitary bees are only pollinators
  • Queen lays about 3000 eggs in a day, fertilized eggs will become female offspring, while unfertilized eggs will become males
  • A honey bee hive can contain up to 40,000 bees
  • Bees flap their wings 230 times per second and their flight speed averages only 15 miles per hour It can fly for up to six miles
  • It takes about 556 workers to gather 1 pound of honey from about 2 million flowers

KELEBEKLER

Butterfly

Butterfly is an insect They are cold blooded animals (ie they maintain their body temperature) They play an important role in maintaining the balance of nature and health of the living world They pollinate wild plants and our crops, ensuring the production of seeds and fruits required for the continued survival of plants and animals, including humans They go through complete metamorphism Their life cycle is of four stages: egg, larvae (caterpillar), pupa and adult butterfly They undergo a wonderful transformation from caterpillar to fantastic winged adult Their normal life span is 2 to 4 weeks They have their skeletons on the outside of their bodies, called the exoskeleton This protects the insect and keeps water inside their bodies so they don’t dry out

Facts About Butterfly
  • Their taste sensors are located in the feet, and by standing on their food, they can taste it! All butterflies have six legs and feet
  • Butterflies smell with their antennae Butterflies breath through openings in their abdomen called "spiracles"
  • Butterflies are the second largest group of pollinatorsnext to bees
  • Female butterflies usually are bigger and live longer than male butterflies Butterflies range in size from a tiny 1/8 inch to a huge almost 12 inches
  • Butterflies weigh only as much as two rose petals, but can fly thousands of miles
  • Butterflies can’t hear, but they can feel vibrations
  • Butterflies can see red, green, and yellow
  • Caterpillars shed their skin to accommodate growthjust like snakes have to
  • Since butterflies are cold blooded it is necessary for them to warm up their flight muscles This is done by basking in the sun in order to absorb heat
  • Butterflies can attain a flight speed of up to 50 kph Butterflies cannot fly if their body temperature is less than 86 degrees
  • They feed primarily on nectar from flowers Some also derive nourishment from pollen, tree sap, rotting fruit, dung, and dissolved minerals in wet sand or dirt

Frog

Frog is an amphibian mostly characterized by long hind legs, a short body, webbed digits, protruding eyes and the absence of a tail Most frogs have a semi-aquatic lifestyle, but move easily on land by jumping or climbing They typically lay their eggs in puddles, ponds or lakes; and their larvae, called tadpoles, have gills and develop in water Adult frogs follow a carnivorous diet, mostly of arthropods, annelids and gastropods Frogs range in size from 10 mm to 300mm The skin hangs loosely on the body because of the lack of loose connective tissue Skin texture varies: it can be smooth, warty or folded Frogs have three eyelid membranes: one is transparent to protect the eyes underwater, and two vary from translucent to opaque Frogs have a tympanum on each side of the head, which is involved in hearing and, in some species, is covered by skin

Facts about Frogs
  • The biggest frog in the world, the Goliath frog, is also the best high-jumper It can leap 3 metres into the air In America, competitions are held to find the best long-jumping frogs
  • Frogs start their lives as 'eggs' often laid in or near fresh water Frogs live on all continents except Antarctica Frogs belong to a group of animals called amphibians
  • There are 6 to 14 frogs species in the world that have no tongues One of these is the African dwarf frog
  • A frog named Santjie, who was in a frog derby in South Africa jumped 13 feet 55 inches
  • The longest life span of a frog was 40 years
  • Some South American frogs have poison in their skin, although the poison is not always deadly They are known as arrow-poison frogs because Indian hunters use the poison to tip their arrows
  • This water-holding frog lives in the desert When it rains, the frog absorbs water through its skin Then it burrows into the sand, where it can stay for over two years until the next rainfallFrogs have strong back legs for jumping
  • The fire-bellied toad turns on its back when it is alarmed to display its bright belly This sudden show of color is often enough to startle its enemy It is also a warning that the toad's skin is poisonous
  • The flying frog uses flaps of skin between its toes to glide

Crocodile

Nile crocodiles are the largest African crocodilian, reaching lengths of up to 5 m (16 ft), or rarely up to 55 m (20 ft) Good sized males weigh 500 kg (1100 lb), while the female are 30% smaller than males They easily snatch and devour a human They have four short, splayed legs; long, powerful tails; a scaly hide with rows of ossified scutes running down their back and tail; and mighty jaws They have nictitating membranes to protect their eyes and, despite the myths, they do have lachrymal glands, and can cleanse their eyes with tears Nostrils, eyes, and ears are situated on the tops of their head, so the rest of the body can remain concealed underwater The underbelly is yellowish, and makes high-quality leather They normally crawl along on their bellies, but they can also "high walk" with their trunks raised above the ground They are capable of surprising bursts of speeds, briefly reaching up to 12 to 14 km/h (75 to 85 mi/h) They can swim equally fast by moving their body and tail in a sinouous fashion

Facts about Nile crocodiles
  • These reptiles are unusually attentive parents It all begins when a large male croc spots a female that catches his eye He bellows and splashes, slapping his snout on the water to get her attention He grunts and growls, and sometimes, inhales as hard as he can, submerging his snout and blowing water through his nostrils, producing a fountainlike spray If the female is willing, the pair rubs the undersides of each other's jaws while sending out warbling sounds-the beginning of a courtship The female croc is ready to lay her eggs nearly two months after mating She scouts the area for a suitable nest site in which to lay the eggs, usually digging a hole on a riverbank, shoreline, or dry streambed She deposits from 25 to 80 eggs in the nest, then settles in for a long vigil For a reptile, it's an unusual display of devotion Other reptiles lay their eggs, then move on The female croc, however, will keep constant guard over the nest during the three-month incubation period, leaving only to cool off in a nearby shady spot or for a quick dip in the water The male is usually close by to help scare off predators Just before hatching, the young crocs send out high-pitched sounds-a signal for help The female digs up the nest It's not unusual for both male and female parents to assist in the hatching by gently taking the eggs in their mouths and rolling them back and forth on their tongues, allowing the hatchlings to break free The mother croc then carefully picks up the 12-inch- (305-centimeter-) long hatchlings in her mouth and carries them to the water
  • The young crocs live under their mother's protection for up to two years, feeding on insects and small fish and growing about a foot (304 centimeters) each year

Chicken

The chicken is one of the most common domestic animal These are kept by human as a source of food, with their eggs and meat Adult male chickens are known as roosters and female over a year are known as hens and younger chickens are known as pullets Both of them have wattles and combs which help to cool the bird by redirecting blood flow to the skin Comb is a fleshy crest on their heads and wattles is a hanging flap of skin either side under their beaks Chickens are gregarious birds and live together as a group of birds They may live upto 5 to 11 years depending on their breed

Facts About Chicken
  • Domestic chickens are not capable to fly for long distance
  • Domestic chickens feed on seeds and insects but wild chicken can eat even lizards and young mice
  • Special breed hens lay about 300 eggs in a year They incubate their eggs and raise young ones A mother hen turns her egg approximately 50 times in a day This is so the yolk does not stick to the shell Hen takes 24-26 hours to lay an egg Chicken lays different colours of eggs, depending on the hen, typically ranging from bright white to shades of brown and even blue, green, and recently reported purple
  • Hen takes 4 pounds of feed to make 1 dozen eggs
  • Chicken take 21 days to hatch
  • The chicken can travel up to 9 miles per hour
  • Roosters may crow at any time of the day or night but hens cluck loudly after laying an egg, and also to call their chicks
  • Their egg laying ability starts decreasing after a year and they are killed for human consumption
  • Roosters are differentiated from hens by their striking plumage, marked by long flowing tails and shiny, pointed feathers on their necks and backs Rooster’s necks and backs are even differently coloured from hens

GÜVERCİNLER

Pigeon

Pigeon are domestic, stout-bodied birds with short necks and short slender bills with a fleshy beak They live in nests and the nests are made of sticks Both the sexes incubate their eggs in there nest They produce crop milk, which is secreted by a sloughing of fluid-filled cells from the lining of the crop A crop is a thin-walled expanded portion of the alimentary tract used for the storage of food prior to digestion Both the sexes produce crop milk to feed their young ones

Facts:
  • Pigeons commonly live to be 15 years old The record is 33 years
  • The World famous Disney World of Orlando maintains a loft of pigeons They release hundreds of pigeons in the park daily
  • Pigeons can fly up to 40 or 50 miles per hour and may fly as far as 600 miles a day
  • Pigeons very in size from 7 ounces to well over 3 pounds The wing span can be as short as 12 inches and as long as three and a half feet
  • The common pigeon was imported by early settlers as food animals and to serve as carriers of messages
  • They are closely related to doves
  • Pigeons are gregarious and tend to be found in small flocks of around twenty to thirty birds
  • They feed on seeds and grains
  • They construct their nest out of small sticks in natural habitat or in buildings
  • They reproduce throughout the year, even during winter, and can raise four or five broods annually The female usually lays two white eggs and both the sexes incubate their eggs in there nest
  • Incubation takes about 16 to 19 days and the young one are feed with crop milk secreted by a sloughing of fluid-filled cells from the lining of the crop
  • They have colorful, iridescent neck feathers which are called a "hackle"
  • Pigeons that are all white are usually albinos
  • Adults have orange or reddish orange eyes Juveniles that are less than six to eight months old have medium brown or grayish brown eyes
  • They have excellent eyesight, they also can see ultraviolet light – part of the light spectrum that humans can’t see
  • They suck up water, using their beaks like straws
  • They seem to be able to detect the Earth’s magnetic fields This magnetic sensitivity, along with the ability to tell direction by sun, seems to help pigeons find their way home
