At the Nuremburg War Crimes Trial, Goering was sentenced to death by hanging Somehow, he had obtained and used a poison capsule, escaping the hangman His body was brought out for display by the Allied authorities


Jumbo, PT Barnum's Prize Elephant


PT Barnum's prize elephant Jumbo was killed September 15, 1885, crossing railroad tracks in St Thomas, Ontario The collision derailed the train, and 150 people were required to haul the elephant's body up an embankment
Jumbo's death was a great loss to Barnum's show, but the loss was somewhat mitigated when both the taxidermied hide of the beast and its skeleton were exhibited together Vital statistics: height 115 feet, weight 65 tons, age 24


Ted Bundy, ****** Killer





Clean-cut ****** killer Theodore "Ted" Bundy confessed to 28 killings, but other estimates indicate that he killed as many as 33 to 100 female victims during the 1970's Often he sexually assaulted his victims with such instruments as crowbars or hairspray bottles While under arrest, Bundy managed to escape twice, one time living for months on the run in Tallahassee




Bundy, a law student at one time, served as his own attorney, but his smooth talking was not able to escape a sentence of death


Ted Bundy was executed January 24, 1989 The hundreds of people holding a vigil outside the prison held up signs such as "Burn Bundy Burn", and celebrated once news of his death was announced

Booth ran backstage, and being famliar with the theatre where he had acted, made his way downstairs and out the back door where he had a horse waiting for him in the back alley-way One year previous to this fateful event, Booth, who was a leading Shakespeare actor of his time, played in Julius Caesar, in which after the assassination of Caesar one of the assassins, said "How many times shall this, our lofty scene be acted o'er, in states unborn and accents yet unknown?" The scene was acted o'er again, only this time it was real and Booth was the perpetrator and Lincoln the victim When Lincoln passed away at 7:22 am on April 15, his Secretary of War, Edwin M Stanton, standing at Lincoln's bedside, said "Now he belongs to the ages"

Lincoln died April 15, 1865 at 7:22 AM Here his body lies in state at the East Room of the White House, where it remained until his funeral on April 19 Lincoln's tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetary, Springfield IL, was built in 1871, where thieves attempted to steal the body in 1876 for ransom In the early 20th century the tomb was redesigned to prevent a recurrence

The Morbid Curse of Robert Todd Lincoln?

Robert Todd Lincoln, the president's oldest son, was at Lincoln's side when he passed away in 1865 Years later, as Secretary of War, Todd Lincoln was present and ready to meet President James A Garfield, when Garfield was assassinated And, when Todd Lincoln entered the Pan-American Exposition Hall in Buffalo, NY, President William McKinley was assassinated by an anarchist Benito Mussolini

On April 28 1945, at the Piazzale Loreto in Milan, Benito Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci were shot and hanged in a spectacle that was photographed repeatedly His last words were, "Shoot me in the chest!" Pennywise Bassist Dead

Jason Thirsk, former bassist for the hardcore punk band Pennywise, was found dead at his Hermosa Beach home on July 29 1996, aged 27 He had been battling depression and alcoholism (the reason he was removed from the band) Somewhat later, All Star Magazine reported that "some sick fans got hold of the suicide photos" and the band was attempting to have them somehow removed from the Internet

On March 1, 1932, an unknown person kidnaps Lindbergh's son, aged 20 months, from their residence in Hopewell, New Jersey The child had been sleeping since 7:30 PM, and discovered missing at 10:00 PM But a mere two months prior, Charles Lindbergh played a prank on the household where he pretended the child was kidnapped This time however, the threat was real, and a ransom note was discovered on the windowsill of the nursery

Discovery


A ransom of $50,000 is paid in gold certificates This excuse is used by President Roosevelt to recall all gold certificates everywhere in the US, on punishment of ten year jail sentence Oh, what conspiracy hath necessity wrought! But then
May 12 1932, the decomposed and animal-eaten body of Lindbergh's son is discovered by truck driver William Allen, about two miles from the family home Cause of death was apparently a fractured skull, and Lindbergh identified the body though a birth defect of one of the toes The aviator ordered the body cremated, without a full autopsy



Hauptmann

Bruno Richard Hauptmann, an illegal German immigrant, was arrested on September 19, 1934 with a ransom bill on his person Furthermore he had hidden in his garage $14,000 of the Lindbergh ransom money Though he denied all involvement, and the evidence on him is shaky at best, he was convicted in a circus atmosphere and executed on April 3, 1936 in Trenton, NJ

Dillinger escaped from prison on March 3, 1934, from an escape-proof cell using a wooden gun he fashioned After resuming his chosen career, and evading an FBI ambush in which two agents were accidentally killed, J Edgar Hoover named Dillinger Public Enemy #1 But the FBI shot him on July 22 at a north Chicago movie theatre

Jesse James

Jesse James is believed to be responsible for the first daylight bank robbery in the United States Over the span of 16 years, the James-Younger gang committed 26 holdups in ten states, leaving 14 dead On April 3, 1882, at the James residence at 1318 Lafayette Street, St Joseph Missouri, Bob Ford shot and killed April 3, 1882, by a bullet to the back of the head Although he killed James to collect the $10,000 reward, Ford was charged with murder and sentenced to hang He was eventually pardoned and died in a bar brawl

Black motorist Malice Green was pulled over for a traffic stop on November 5, 1992 It is not clear what exactly happened, but Malice did not completely cooperate with police, and he ended up getting fatally beaten by a flashlight wielded in some manner by two white police officers
Mayor Coleman Young quickly suspended the officers involved, and their superiors The Los Angeles riots over the Rodney King verdict were still in recent memory, and it seemed prudent to avoid additional problems in the already tense city
The city of Detroit tried to get the coroner, Kalil Jiraki, to testify that cocaine was involved in the incident Jiraki refused, but not without consequences to his job But he was subsequently awarded $25 million in a harrassment, defamation, and wrongful termination suit
A topless bar owner pledged to donate $4,000 to the officers' defense fund, every time his establishments were raided
Officers Larry Nevers and Walter Budzyn were charged with murder and convicted by a mostly black jury


Tupac Shakur


In late 1997 Cathy Scott published "The Killing of Tupac Shakur", which contained an autopsy photo of Shakur that had been leaked by a source within the Las Vegas police department

Tabloid offers as high as $100K were turned down for the photo, which we reproduce above LVMPD was not happy about the photo being leaked, but being property of the people of the United States, it is in the public domain We reproduce it here

Silent film actor Rudolph Valentino died August 23, 1926, age 31, from complications due to surgery to repair a perforated ulcer Rudolph was one of the premiere stars of the day, and was given the nickname "The Great Lover", though largely undeserved Riots occurred in New York City amongst those who were trying to view his body

Musician Tiny Tim died on November 30th, 1996, aged variously 64 to 66 He had been hospitalized in September after falling off of a stage during a ukelele festival Tiny Tim gained fame for his "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" rendition, and for the spectacle of marrying Vicki Budinger on the Tonight Show, 1969



Evita Peron
Evita Peron died July 26, 1952, of uterine cancer in Buenos Aires Her body was stolen by anti-Peronistas in 1955 and hidden in Italy until 1971 In 1974, Evita's remains were returned to Argentina for burial in the presidential crypt But two years following that, they were transferred to lie beneath several protective layers of steel in the Duarte family's tomb, at Recoleta cemetery in Buenos Aires

Andrew Cunanan, at the time wanted for questioning over five murders, shot and killed fashion designer Gianni Versace in front of Versace's Miami home Part of the mystique involved in the search for Cunanan was due to the fact that the FBI released so many pictures of him, at varying stages of his life The media morphed him into some type of master of disguise, which he clearly was not Cunanan suicided July 23, 1997 on a houseboat in Miami

On October 9, 1967, Bolivian forces executed Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara, and amputated his hands for identification Guevara had been agitating in Bolivia, a definite no-no The location of the body remained a mystery for 30 years, until a search by the Bolivian government uncovered it on a mountainside near Vallegrande Now, Vallegrande is an epicenter for Che merchandising

Carole Landis

The beautiful film actress Carole Landis committed suicide in Brentwood Heights with an overdose of Seconal, July 5 1948 While she did appear in quite a number of films in the 1940's, her career never met her expectations By the time she died her contract with 20th Century Fox had been ended

Pol Pot, the Cambodian dictator and leader of the Khmer Rouge, was responsible for the deaths of 15 million His activities concerning the extermination of 20% of the Cambodian population inspired the award winning movie, The Killing Fields Pot died at age 73 on April 15, 1998, after several years of ill health The US was planning to arrest Pot and deport him for a war crimes trial Oddly, by many accounts, in person he was a nice guy
